Day 9 Re-cap

The tournament started with 64 teams.
Now there are 2.
We started with 23 participants,
But most didn't have a clue.

The championship is coming,
At 9pm est on CBS.
The final contest...
To see who is the best.

Most say it will be the last year's champ...
The Florida Gators.
But I'm here to tell you...
They're impersonators.

On Monday night...
There will be ONE star in the sky.
It will sit over Columbus, OH...
And look like a Buckeye.

D. Smith, you're the second smartest in the pool
...and you put up a good fight.
But on Monday...
I'm gonna have to turn out the light.

The trophy will be mine
...and mine alone.
The rest of you suckers...
Can go on home.

Come on Buckeyes! Don't let me down!

Day 8 Re-cap

And then there were 4...

Well, well, well. It appears that "2smooth" has hit a rough patch. Looks like you bet on the wrong horse, my friend. Can you say, "H - O - Y - A - S!!!!!!!!!!" Now all I need to make my masterpiece complete is total domination by THE Ohio State Buckeyes. As the Buckeyes go, so do I. If they win, I win!

Manuel Smith has taken sole possession of 1st place. Jay Swish is in 2nd. Doris Smith and I are tied for 3rd. Again, it's still anyone's trophy to win.

Ma, congratulations to you. I am very proud of you. You're currently tied for 9th. If you keep it up, you'll win Most Improved Player this year. Good luck. Lil' Jim, you're on track to win Most Disappointing Performance by a verteran.

Until next Saturday...

Day 7 Re-cap

UCLA wins!!!

As a result, there’s a new leader of the pack. Guess who’s back? …Cameron Jae Phillips! Yes, last year’s champion has resurfaced! She’s currently tied for first with Keith Adams and “2smooth.”

It’s still anyone’s trophy to win…or lose.

Day 6 Re-cap

It appears that my reign at the top is over...as I expected. :-( I have fallen from 1st to 7th. Oh well, it was fun for a day.

Keith "Adams 1" Adams has made an aggressive move for the lead! He's now tied for 1st with "2smooth." Is it just me...or is everyone tired of "2smooth?" This guy has been floating between 1st and 2nd since the competition began. Here's the thing, if we all pull together and cheer for Georgetown on Sunday, that will take care of "2smooth" ...and his Tarheels. Come on people, cheer for the Hoyas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're going down "2smooth"...you're going down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hang in there Keith...you can beat this guy.

Manuel "Smith 1" Smith is hangin' tough. He's currently in 3rd.

Headroes...my apologies. I see you're still hanging around the top-of-the-pack. ...too stubborn to fall I guess. Robert, just so you know...I'm rooting for Sharolyn...not you. Come on Sharolyn!

"Jay Swish"...what can I say? At one point yesterday you took the lead...again. By the end of the night, you were back in 6th place. You're like a yo-yo. Up and down...up and down.

Some things haven't changed. Just look at the back-of-the-pack. Sad. Sad.

Will all the No. 1's make it to the final four? The Saturday and Sunday games should be great! Stay tuned.

Day 5 Re-cap

Yes. That's right! I am tied for first, baby! Tied for first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you haven't seen the bracket, I attached it for you. :-) Hey, what do you expect? I'll probably drop tomorrow...but tonight, I'M ON TOP OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok...enough about me. (Did I mention I'm tied for first?) Let's see what else is going on...

2smooth is still hanging tough. Yeah...he's tied for first...but who really cares? Sharolyn Headroe has been quiet throughout the tournament. She has slowly moved up and is now tied for 3rd with Manuel "Smith 1" Smith. I'm not sure she has much staying power...but she's up there for now. Congrats Sharolyn! I really hope you beat your husband. Sorry Robert...but I hope your kids beat you too.

Jay Swishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh was in first place before the Tenn / Ohio State game. ...and he was probably feeling pretty good about himself at half time. Sorry Charlie. You lose. How does it feel to go from 1st place to 6th place in one night? Swishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Maybe your name should be "Jay Sink"...or "Jay Falling Apart"...or "Jay Can't Hold on to the Lead for an Entire Night." Get back to me when you figure it out.

In a previous message, I mentioned Will "the champ is here" Banks. I asked him to consider a name change...since "champs" don't sit in 14th place. I'm happy to see that he has moved up (currently tied for 6th)...but "champs" don't place 6th either. I guess my point still stands. Instead of "the champ is here" maybe you can be Will "I'm not in last place" Banks. That's probably a safe bet...considering last place is pretty much locked up. Hi Desi.

Another slow mover is Doris "Smith1" Smith. She has been hovering around the middle of the pack since the tournament began. She had a great round tonight and appears to be in striking distance...currently sitting in 8th. My only criticism is her lack of creativity in nick names. I guess it runs in the family (son, Manuel "Smith1" Smith).

One noteworthy shift is between the Phillips! Carl Phillips has over taken Jodi Phillips! Carl is now in 17th and Jodi is in 18th! Ok...ok...it's not that exciting. I just feel like we have to do something to motivate the folks in the back of the pack. Otherwise, they'll just sit back there and beat each other up. Speaking of which, Jodi is giving Desiree a hard time for having 0.4 (not .04) % correct when she only has 40%. It's like watching the movie "Dumb & Dumber." I think everyone in the back of the pack should be like Jasen "J-dog" Graves. He has an awesome nickname...and he's very comfortable being in 22nd place. Maybe I shouldn't speak for him. I'm assuming he's comfortable...since he's been there for most of the tournament. Maybe he's very uncomfortable and we have no idea...but at least he's quiet. Thanks Jasen. Take your beating like a man. At least you have the guinea pig girls sitting right there close to you.

Other than MY demise...are there any predictions for Friday night?

Day 4 Re-cap

Well...that's the end of the first weekend. Is everyone having fun? Or...are you trying to figure out what the heck you were thinking when you filled out your bracket. Either way...we're down to the Sweet 16!

Robert, Robert, Robert. Where do I begin? First of all, let me thank you for signing up your family. Second, let me acknowledge how well Brandon has done...so far. Also, let me tell you how much I have appreciated your silence. It has been golden. Thank you. But...since you opened your mouth, I have to respond... In looking at the standings after 4 days, you and your son are tied for third. Outside looking in, that's great! Unfortunately, my trained eye noticed that you are only capable of scoring a total of 960 points...IF your remaining picks are perfect. ...and Brandon is capable of scoring 1020 points...IF all of his picks are correct going forward. So...you see, it is far more likely that one of these folks will win:

"Jay Swish" (1100)
"Adams 1" (1080)
"the champ is here" (1080)
"2smooth"(1040)
"Smith 1" (1040)
"Kay" (1040)
"Jodi" (1040)

(NOTE - - When looking at the standings, see the 3rd column from the right for the total "potential" points each competitor can get...based on teams they still have in the tournament.)

So...Robert...as I mentioned before, SILENCE IS GOLDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at it this way...this will be a great opportunity for you teach young Brandon how to be a gracious LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I shouldn't be so pessimistic. Don't give up hope completely...but start preparing the child for the possibility that the big, shiny champion's trophy will not be sent to 8032 Stone Hill Drive, Plano, Texas 75025. Again, thanks for playing.

One of the weekend's surprises is the fact that Karyn "Kay" Graves is only in 6th place. Since she is a 2-time champion, I expected a little more from her. Especially after she confided in me that she was putting a lot of thought into this year's bracket. See what happens when you actually put thought into it... This only confirms my suspicions from 2004 and 2005. Obviously, it was just dumb luck. ...no skill or expert knowledge...just pure luck. Oh well...I guess we'll have to look for another role model.

I am hugely disappointed in Jimmy "JG (Lil Jim)" Graves. He's off to a horrible start...and it's just gonna get worse. Sorry. I thought this guy was an athlete. I ASSUMED he knew he was suppose to select the teams that were more likely to win...not lose. Again, I'm starting to see a pattern in that household (Kay, Lil Jim, Jasen)...CONFUSION!

All is all, this was a very exciting weekend. There are lots of competitors still in the hunt. Good luck next weekend.

For those of you who are completely out of the running, I hear there are some good movies coming out next weekend.

Day 3 Re-cap

Overtime! Double overtime!!! What a day! Boom!Shacka!Lacka! U-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you say, "Pandemonium!"

I thought I would have to apologize to Carole "Pat" Myrie for being so critical of her picks (...Xavier and Maryland in the championship). As it turns out, Xavier ALMOST shocked the world! I even found myself rooting for them in the second half. But...Ohio State was just too much for them in overtime. The Xavier loss was the first nail in Momma Myrie's coffin. When Maryland lost, that was the final nail. Rest-in-Peace Carole "Pat" Myrie. You're done. Now you have plenty of time to think about next year. Maybe you can go wherever Duke went after they lost.

Like I said yesterday, the only noise we might hear from Desiree would be if Maryland kept winning. (It's her alma mater.) Since they lost, all I can hear coming from Silver Springs, Maryland (where Desi lives) is crickets. If you listen closely, you can hear them too. Listen... chirp, chirp...chirp, chirp

Speaking of alma maters, Indiana only scored 13 points in the first half of their game against UCLA. I guess I should have known at that point. I can't decide what's worse...the years the Hoosiers don't make it to the tournament...or the years we make it and then get blown out. I'll have to think about this a little more... Hmmm... At least we made it interesting at the very end. Kinda...

This year, Jernie & Jordan have combined forces. Putting their heads together they've still only managed to win enough games to be in 19th place. Strange. I guess if you take a 5 year old brain and combine it with 9 year old brain, you still don't have much. Maybe next year, they'll let their guinea pig fill out their bracket. It probably won't hurt.

John "2smooth" Simms is still doing well. ...but Brandon Headroe is making a move. He's currently tied with "2smooth" for 1st place. Good job Brandon!

Not much (any) movement at the bottom of the standings. Jodi, Carl, J-dog and Desi...20th - 23rd respectively...still.

I'm assuming everyone saw my cousins lead their respective universities to the Sweet 16. AJ Graves, guard, from Butler and Antonio Graves, guard, from the University of Pittsburg. (See profiles below.)

...and in case you didn't see it, I'm currently tied for 4th. Yes Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes.
